Entry information

Chetham’s School of Music admits pupils through musical auditions rather than a standard academic 11+ examination. Applicants are encouraged to apply by December for entry the following September. The process starts with an advice audition or video submission and successful candidates are invited to a formal audition.

Entry stage: Lower School (Years 4–8), including Year 7

The admissions process

  • Apply by December before the intended September entry.
  • Arrange an advice audition in person or submit video recordings of two pieces on the principal instrument, with scales or arpeggios.
  • Successful candidates are invited to a formal audition; music audition is the criterion for entry.

Know what to expect

Follow the school’s assessment guidance.

Chetham’s asks applicants to demonstrate their music at an advice audition or video submission, followed by a formal audition if invited. Prepare the music and any scales or arpeggios requested by the school; Plusling can support everyday academic learning but does not prepare a child for the musical audition.
