Entry information
Manchester Vocational and Learning Academy is a small independent specialist school for pupils aged 11–16. Its current admissions policy describes referral by a school or local authority, a review of the young person’s needs, a family/referrer meeting and tour, trial days, and a placement decision that usually goes to a funding panel. Baseline academic testing is part of the integration plan after a place is agreed, not an entrance exam.
Entry stage: Specialist school referral
The admissions process
- Start with a referrer (a school or local authority) completing the school’s Referral Form and providing relevant information, including an EHC Plan where applicable.
- MVLA reviews the information to decide whether it can meet the young person’s needs. The policy says the young person, family/carers and relevant workers are then invited to meet senior staff and tour the school.
- If everyone wishes to continue, the school may arrange one or more trial days. If the trial is suitable, the referrer agrees a placement proposal, usually for its funding panel. MVLA then decides whether to offer a place and arranges a start date.
- The policy says the school and referrer may agree a suitable year group and a gradual integration plan. Baseline academic testing is included in that plan after approval; it is not described as an entrance selection test.
